Volkswagen ID Buzz Minivan Transformed into Driverless Taxi

Volkswagen Moia has unveiled a production version of an autonomous taxi based on the ID Buzz minivan. The electric vehicle is equipped with an autopilot system and is designed for completely unmanned passenger transportation in urban conditions.

The development is being carried out within the Volkswagen Group, and the first commercial operation is planned for 2026 in Los Angeles. The modified ID Buzz received 27 sensors, including 13 cameras, 9 lidars and 5 radars. They are installed around the perimeter and on the roof of the minivan.

The interior is designed for four passengers, with easy access to the second row via a sliding door and a free passage. There is no partition between the driver’s area and the passenger compartment – instead, there is space for luggage.

In autopilot mode, the driver’s seat will be folded and the steering wheel will be retracted. Passengers can control the ride using buttons in the cabin or via a mobile app. Functions include starting a route, calling for assistance, and sending an SOS signal.

By 2026, Los Angeles plans to launch regular unmanned passenger transportation. In addition, Moia offers comprehensive solutions for cities and companies interested in integrating autonomous transport. The package includes electric vehicles, as well as the necessary software.
