At Computex 2025, Cherry, a renowned manufacturer of keyboard switches, introduced its first-ever inductive switches alongside three new additions to its popular MX series of mechanical switches. This announcement signifies a strategic move for Cherry, emphasizing durability, energy efficiency, and refined tactile experiences in keyboard technology.
The highlight of Cherry’s unveiling was the Cherry IK, the company’s inaugural inductive switch. This innovative switch utilizes a contactless actuation method based on electromagnetic field detection, which promises to significantly reduce mechanical wear and enhance actuation accuracy.
Key features of the Cherry IK include vibrant RGB lighting and user-customizable actuation points, allowing for a personalized typing experience. Cherry claims that these new inductive switches are remarkably energy-efficient, consuming 50% less power than traditional magnetic switches and a mere 5% of the power used by Hall effect switches. With a declared lifespan exceeding one million clicks, the Cherry IK switches are slated for commercial release in the fall of 2025.
In addition to their groundbreaking inductive technology, Cherry also announced three new mechanical switches within their established MX series:
- MX Honey: This switch joins the MX2A family as Cherry’s first silent tactile option. It features a redesigned spring and comes pre-lubricated from the factory, aiming to provide a satisfying tactile bump with significantly reduced noise.
- MX Blossom: Celebrating Cherry’s 72nd anniversary, the MX Blossom is their lightest linear switch to date. Requiring only 35 centinewtons of force for actuation, this MX2A family member is designed for users who prefer a minimal and smooth typing resistance.
- MX Falcon: Inspired by classic typewriters and developed with community feedback, the MX Falcon is a tactile switch engineered for a more pronounced and crisp keypress. It marks Cherry’s first switch with an extended stem, resulting in a sharper bottom-out feel.
Enthusiasts won’t have to wait long for the new MX mechanical switches, as Cherry announced that keyboards featuring the MX Honey, MX Blossom, and MX Falcon will be available starting this June. Individual switch kits for DIY keyboard builders are expected to follow shortly thereafter. This dual announcement from Cherry showcases their commitment to both innovative contactless technology and the continued refinement of their beloved mechanical switch lineup.
