The YouTube app for both Android and iOS has received a new update that introduces changes to the design of the video player interface. According to the developers, these modifications were implemented based on user feedback, particularly concerning the previous implementation of the “picture in picture” (PiP) functionality.
The key change lies in the updated miniplayer, which has undergone a simplification of its controls. The bottom control panel has been removed. Now, the upper left corner of the miniplayer window displays only a play/pause icon, while the upper right corner features a cross button for closing the window. Both of these elements fade and become transparent after a few seconds of inactivity, minimizing visual clutter.
The familiar red progress bar remains at the bottom of the miniplayer window, allowing users to track the video’s progress. Once the video has finished playing, a repeat button will appear, enabling quick replays. The updated miniplayer retains the ability to be resized by pinching and zooming and can be easily minimized or hidden by dragging it to the left or right edge of the screen.
These design changes are already rolling out and are available in the latest versions of the YouTube mobile app. For Android users, the required build number is 20.19.37 or newer, while iOS users should ensure their app version is 20.20.5 or later to experience the redesigned video player. This update aims to provide a cleaner and more intuitive experience for users utilizing the miniplayer feature.
