The Chinese company Colorful has proposed an innovative solution to address the issue of melting 12V-2×6 connectors found on recent generations of NVIDIA video cards. To tackle this problem, the vendor intends to produce modular power connectors that users can easily replace themselves without needing to visit a service center if a failure occurs.
To implement this concept, the manufacturer has equipped test samples of their RTX 50 series video cards with a specialized slot. This slot allows the circuit board containing the power connector to be installed in a manner similar to how a video card is installed in a PCI-Express slot.
While this solution does not inherently reduce the risk of connector melting (which is often linked to uneven current distribution across the contacts), it offers a significant advantage in the event of damage. Users would be able to simply replace a faulty connector with a new one. The pricing for these original replacement parts and the release timeframe for the modified video cards have not yet been disclosed.
