Following the announcement of OpenAI’s acquisition of Jony Ive’s AI gadget project, new insider information regarding the upcoming device has emerged online. Renowned industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has shared details about the gadget’s potential form factor, while designer Ben Geskin has created a speculative render based on the available information.
According to Kuo’s independent investigation, the current prototype of OpenAI’s AI gadget is “slightly larger” than the commercially unsuccessful Humane AI Pin. However, the intended final design is described as “as compact and elegant” as Apple’s iconic iPod Shuffle. Despite this design direction, the device is still in the early stages of development, with mass production not anticipated to commence before 2027.
Kuo also offered his perspective on the timing of the OpenAI-Ive collaboration announcement, suggesting that it may have been strategically timed to “distract the market from the recent Google I/O event.” He posits that Google’s demonstrated ecosystem and AI integration during the I/O keynotes pose a significant challenge that OpenAI is currently grappling with, leading them to employ a new narrative to redirect public attention.
The analyst further speculated on potential usage scenarios, suggesting that one option could involve wearing the device around the neck.
