Former NASA engineer Mark Rober has launched a complimentary service for taking selfies with the Earth as a backdrop. No need for orbital travel; simply upload your photo to a satellite, which will display it against the globe and return the resulting image to you.
The Sat Gus satellite (62713/2025-009DJ), launched in January 2025, is equipped with a display and camera to repeatedly photograph uploaded images against the Earth’s background. The concept for this project originated with Crunchlabs creator and former NASA engineer Mark Rober and was realized with support from Google and American telecom operator T-Mobile.
To create your “space selfie,” just visit the Crunchlabs website and upload your photo. The service will also notify you when the satellite passes over your approximate location and then send the finished image once it’s ready. Sat Gus can capture up to 1,000 photos daily. The first set of selfies is expected to “arrive” back on Earth in mid-summer.
