Artist Shows Screenshots of Cancelled Quake 5

The Quake series is rightfully considered one of the most iconic in the history of video games, but it has not received a sequel for many years. However, as it turned out, the franchise was supposed to develop – the next part already had a working build.

Artist Tao Le from id Software has published screenshots of Quake 5, which was cancelled at one stage of production. The game was developed around the same time as the first part of Rage and the cancelled DOOM 4, that is, in the 2010s. Quake 5 was finally scrapped when the studio decided to focus on DOOM 2016. The screenshots show various locations, mostly unfinished and more reminiscent of sketches, and even some monsters that gamers could have encountered during the game.

The original Quake, which launched the series, was released in 1996. The latest installment in the franchise, Quake 4, was released in 2005. And in 2025, the shooter series was inducted into the Video Game Hall of Fame at the National Museum of Play, along with Tamagotchi, GoldenEye 007, and Defender.
