Automotive Version of Russia’s “Aurora” OS Unveiled: Here’s What It Can Do

First Look from the CIPR-2025 Tech Expo

At the Digital Industry of Industrial Russia (CIPR-2025) exhibition, developers from Open Mobile Platform, a subsidiary of Rostelecom, officially presented the automotive version of the Aurora operating system. Journalists from Hi-Tech Mail got an early hands-on look at the system in action — offering a glimpse into Russia’s domestic alternative to platforms like Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

What Is Aurora for Cars?

The new version of Aurora OS is designed for in-car multimedia systems. It gives drivers access to a variety of digital services, including:

  • Wink streaming (for movies and shows)

  • Weather forecasts

  • Online libraries

  • 2GIS navigation

Just like Apple CarPlay, Aurora allows apps to run in full-screen or widget mode, offering flexible in-dash display options. It also supports climate control functions, allowing drivers to adjust cabin temperature directly through the system.

More Apps Coming Soon

The development team revealed plans to expand the OS’s ecosystem significantly. They are currently in talks with major Russian tech players like Yandex and Sber, which may lead to the integration of:

  • Yandex Maps, Music, and Books

  • Sber’s Sound streaming service

However, there’s one major catch: to unlock all features, the driver’s smartphone must also run the Aurora OS. That means no support for Android or iOS devices at this time — a limitation that may restrict mainstream adoption unless Aurora gains wider traction in the smartphone market.

Who Will Use It?

The primary launch partner for Aurora OS in cars is AvtoVAZ, Russia’s largest automaker. But developers confirmed they are also in discussions with Sollers, GAZ, and UAZ to expand implementation across other domestic car brands.
