MGM’s Tiny Magnetic Bicycle Motor Runs Without Friction

Star Union has introduced the Magnetic Gear Motor (MGM), a bicycle motor that replaces traditional gears with a system of magnets that transmit torque without physical contact. This enables it to achieve an efficiency of up to 90%, minimizing energy loss due to friction.

The 12 x 10 x 9cm motor, weighing 2.3kg, is said to deliver up to 80Nm of peak torque and 250W of power (up to 580W peak), making it one of the most efficient electric bike solutions available.

The absence of friction reduces wear and tear on parts and noise levels when driving. The magnetic clutch can safely slip under overload, protecting the engine from damage. Unlike systems with mechanical gearboxes, MGM does not require regular maintenance.

Tests have shown that even with its small size, the motor provides a greater range compared to its counterparts. Star Union has already developed a range of kits for road and mountain bikes with batteries from 160 to 480 Wh. Deliveries to OEMs could begin in the fourth quarter of 2025.
