Nissan Electrifies the Micra for Its New Generation

Nissan has revealed the latest iteration of its popular Micra hatchback, marking a significant turning point in the model’s history: for the first time, it will be exclusively powered by an electric powertrain. The new Micra is built upon the AmpR Small platform, a modular architecture also underpinning Renault’s 5 E-Tech and 4 E-Tech electric vehicles.

This strategic platform sharing provides the new Nissan Micra with a solid foundation in the compact electric vehicle segment. Two distinct versions will be available to consumers. The entry-level model features a 40 kWh battery paired with a 121 horsepower (90 kW) electric motor. This configuration offers a driving range of up to 314 kilometers (approximately 195 miles) on a single charge, with a curb weight of 1,400 kg (around 3,086 lbs).

For buyers seeking greater range and power, an upgraded variant is also offered. This version boasts a larger 52 kWh battery and a more potent 148 horsepower (110 kW) electric motor, extending the driving range to an impressive 407 kilometers (approximately 253 miles). The weight of this higher-specification model is 1524 kg (around 3,360 lbs). Furthermore, this long-range Micra supports rapid direct current (DC) charging up to 80 kW, enabling a quick battery top-up from 15% to 80% in just 30 minutes.

Beyond the shared platform, Nissan has also incorporated several components from Renault, including the suspension system, braking system, and even elements of the interior design, most notably the dual-screen multimedia system. The distinguishing features of the new electric Micra lie in its signature round LED headlights, reminiscent of the 2002 Micra, and the uniquely styled side body panels, giving it a distinct Nissan identity.

To enhance efficiency, the electric Micra is equipped with a regenerative braking system featuring adjustable control. This system allows drivers to tailor the level of energy recuperation during deceleration, potentially increasing the effective driving range by an estimated 10–15% in urban driving conditions.

Sales of the all-electric Nissan Micra are scheduled to commence in 2025, although the exact pricing details for both versions have yet to be announced. This move signals Nissan’s commitment to electrification within its compact car lineup and positions the Micra to compete in the growing electric hatchback market.
