NVIDIA RTX 5090 Easily Cracks Digital Passwords

Hive Systems tested the new flagship NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 graphics card in a password hash cracking task. It turned out that a bundle of 12 such graphics chips can crack an eight-digit numeric password in just 15 minutes.

Instead of brute-forcing passwords directly, the system analyzes their hashes — encrypted versions stored in databases. Graphics cards are ideal for this task thanks to parallel computing. The new RTX 5090 demonstrates 33% higher performance compared to the RTX 4090. If the latter needed 4 hours to crack an eight-digit numerical password, the new card only needs 3 hours.

While the RTX 5090 is faster at simple combinations, complex passwords with numbers, uppercase and lowercase letters, and symbols remain resistant. It would take 62 years to crack such a password with a 12-card bundle, and 164 years with special characters added. This underscores the importance of using complex passwords to protect your data.

Hive Systems research shows that even the most powerful GPUs can’t crack complex passwords quickly. But simple digital combinations remain vulnerable, so experts recommend using password managers and two-factor authentication.
