Own Story. Owlcat Games Co-Founder Shares Details of The Expanse: Osiris Reborn
Owlcat Games recently surprised gamers with the announcement of The Expanse: Osiris Reborn — not another isometric RPG, but an action RPG based on the sci-fi series The Expanse. Many had questions, and one of the key figures in the studio decided to answer them.
Alexander Mishulin, creative director of Owlcat, spoke with the portal Wccftech . During the conversation, the developer shared some interesting details about the project:
- production started with a modest pitch from a few company employees, which was liked by the rest of the team;
- development formally began in 2021, and the studio spent a year creating prototypes (six of which were dedicated to the combat system) and vertical sections;
- Osiris Reborn was originally conceived as a behind-the-scenes action game powered by Unreal Engine 5, so the developers had to slightly change their approach to production processes within Owlcat Games;
- The title is being developed by people from CD Projekt RED, and the total number of Owlcat employees has reached 450 people;
- The Expanse: Osiris Reborn is being developed in parallel with Warhammer 40,000: Dark Heresy, and Mishulin does not know which game will come out first;
- the events of the new book will unfold between the first two novels of the “Space” cycle and will tell a unique story in the setting; Mishulin and co want to expand the universe of The Expanse;
- Owlcat does not plan to use characters familiar from the books and TV series;
- As in the team’s previous games, the role-playing component in The Expanse is not for show; even the protagonist’s origin will feature in dialogues and cutscenes;
- Osiris Reborn will do without the ship flying mini-game;
- the studio wants to put even more emphasis on the partners than usual.
You’ll be able to take two party members on missions, but that doesn’t mean the rest of your team will be left behind. They’ll still be able to help you in a variety of ways. Some will take on other objectives or form a second team that will come from a different direction. Sometimes you’ll even meet them. Many missions vary in structure.
The Expanse: Osiris Reborn does not yet have a release date. The project will be released on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series.
