Portable PS4 Digital Foundry Analyzes Cyberpunk 2077 on Switch 2

Next week marks the anticipated premiere of the Nintendo Switch 2. Alongside the console, a range of games, including several notable ports, will be available. The portable version of Cyberpunk 2077 has generated significant public interest: has CD Projekt managed to bring this visually demanding action game to a hybrid platform? Journalists have shared their initial analysis.

Experts at Digital Foundry have analyzed a 37-minute gameplay video showcasing the action game in docked mode. Overall, they expressed considerable positive impressions, though noting a few minor issues. According to their analysis, the new Switch 2 version is technically quite similar to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox Series S versions, but with a couple of key differences:

  • Nintendo Switch 2 (“Quality”, Docked): 720p to 1080p, DLSS
  • PS4: 720p to 900p, TAA
  • Xbox Series S: 1296p to 1440p, FSR 2

Texture quality and level of detail appear very consistent across all three ports. However, the Switch 2 version benefits from its higher resolution and the implementation of DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling). DLSS helps to smooth out jagged edges and improve image stability. Despite this, Digital Foundry noted that Cyberpunk 2077 appears slightly sharper on the Series S during fast-paced action sequences.

The performance of the portable version of the blockbuster seems promising. In “quality” mode, the game reportedly maintains a stable 30 frames per second (fps), with the frame rate occasionally dipping to the 20+ range while driving through Night City. A total of four graphics options have been announced:

  • Docked Mode, Quality: Target 1080p with DLSS, 30 fps
  • Docked Mode, “Performance”: Resolution unknown, 40 fps
  • Handheld Mode, Quality: Target 1080p with DLSS, 30 fps
  • Handheld Mode, Performance: Target 720p with DLSS, 40 fps

The Digital Foundry team is generally satisfied with their initial observations, although they acknowledge uncertainty about whether the analyzed video represents the final build of the game. They have promised to release a more comprehensive technical review of Cyberpunk 2077 on Switch 2 in the future. The port, along with the new console, is scheduled for release on June 5th.
