Valve has released a small but very useful update for Linux users of the beta version of the Steam client. It affected the way the Proton add-on is enabled, making it a little easier to run Windows games on alternative OSes.
By default, the global Proton enablement option in the Steam Linux app only works for a specific “whitelist” of games compiled by Valve itself. If you don’t enable it, the install button will simply be inactive for titles that don’t have an official Linux version.
In the latest “beta” this restriction is removed, and the function works by default for the entire user library. It is worth noting that this does not guarantee automatic compatibility of games with Proton – but in any case, it gives the opportunity to try to launch them without dancing with a tambourine. When exactly the innovation will appear in the stable version of the Steam client for Linux is still unknown.
