Microsoft has begun testing a new Windows 11 feature called User Interaction-Aware CPU Power Management. According to the software maker’s calculations, it should reduce the load on laptop hardware to increase battery life — but with one caveat.
The essence of the innovation is the intentional limitation of the processor’s performance. If the OS detects that the user has stopped interacting with it (for example, not pressing keys or moving the cursor), it will activate “standby mode” with reduced power consumption. As soon as activity resumes, the OS will return to standard settings.
This approach, Microsoft claims, will improve laptop battery life and reduce energy consumption. The new feature is already being tested in Windows 11 test build 26200.5603, and is expected to become publicly available no later than the release of build 25H2.
