Free-to-play game developers never run out of creative (and controversial) ways to monetize their titles. Wargaming’s latest attempt? “Matryoshka-style” loot boxes – and the community is not happy about it.
The “Raumfalte” Loot Box Controversy
Since May 15, World of Tanks has offered a new type of loot box called “Raumfalte”—with a twist: inside each one, there’s a 20% chance of finding another loot box containing even rarer items.
This creates a Russian-doll-style chain where players might uncover:
-
A Raumfalte within a Raumfalte (and another, and another…)
-
A loop where the rarest box drops the most basic one
-
Raumfalte Proto, the entry-level version that unlocks higher-tier variants
Backlash from the Community
Wargaming likely expected players to embrace this “innovative” mechanic. They were wrong. The reaction has been overwhelmingly negative, with many calling it a predatory monetization tactic.
A Regional Oddity
Interestingly, World of Tanks under Lesta Games (the Russian version) does not feature these loot boxes. But given recent events, the company likely has bigger concerns.
